USS DeLong, a 1090-ton Tattnall class destroyer built at Camden, New Jersey, was commissioned in September 1919. She operated in the Caribbean area and off Central America for much of the rest of that year and, after late December, was based at San Diego, California. In reserve and undergoing overhaul from June 1920 to June 1921, during which time she received the designation DD-129, DeLong then resumed operations out of San Diego. While steaming off the foggy California coast on 1 December 1921, she ran ashore at Halfmoon Bay. Though subsequently pulled off, DeLong was so badly damaged as to be not worth repairing. The destroyer was decommissioned in March and sold in September 1922.
USS DeLong was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander George W. DeLong, USN, (1844-1881), who commanded the 1879-1881 Jeannette Arctic Expedition.
